Help & Frequently Asked Questions

What are the redwood grades?

Redwood lumber is available in different grades, as determined by the Redwood Inspection Service. AMM Fencing offers Con Common, Con Heart, and Clear Heart redwood.

Con Common

Redwood Con Common – short for Construction Common – is frequently used for outdoor construction projects. Con Common wood is culled from the outer part of the log. There are some visible knots, where branches previously existed, and a degree of color variation in Con Common wood. Its affordability makes Con Common the most popular redwood material for fencing.

Redwood Con Heart

Closer to the center of the tree, Con Heart displays a more uniform red color and contains fewer knots than Con Common wood. It is also more resistant to pests and rot than the lower grade.
